The Holistic Healing Power of Cats

Celebrate Global Cat Day with a Purr on October 16th

written by Brandi K McMurry

Happy Global Cat Day! In celebration, we want to highlight the holistic health benefits a cat's purr can provide for its human companions.

“If we accept that sound is vibration and we know that vibration touches every part of our physical being, then we understand that sound is heard not only through our ears but through every cell in our bodies.” — Integrative Oncologist Dr Mitchell Gaynor

Vibrating for bone health

Cats purr ranges from 25 up to 140 hertz. Studies show that vibrations at 20 to 50 Hz can stimulate bone healing and growth. Fractures heal faster, injured bones strengthen, and stiff joints can move more easily because inflammation decreases.

Om for cardiovascular health

Purring is the instinctual way cats perform self-care. Studies show a cat’s purr can decrease the symptoms of dyspnoea (difficulty in breathing) in both cats and humans. Children are less likely to develop seasonal or animal allergies when they live with a pet cat because their immune system adjusts to pet dander.

From Health Fitness Revolution:

“A study conducted by the University of Minnesota’s Stroke Institute in Minneapolis has shown that those who do not own cats are 30–40% more likely to die of heart attacks than their cat-owning counterparts.”

Therapeutic Benefits

Owning a cat can help relieve symptoms of stress and anxiety. Cuddling with a beloved pet can release oxytocin, the love chemical, and ease loneliness. Your cat’s purr can create a calming sensation in your body, as well as the kitty’s own body.
